Asterisk
Live Site Builder

A no-code website builder tool to quickly set up “live sites” for hackathon organizers.

Role

I worked as a UX Designer along with 5 other designers and 5 developers.

My major contributions included designing the interfaces for the Sponsors page and Challenges & Prizes page.

Background

Asterisk was an event organizing company specializing in hackathon event organizing. Originally starting out as a team of young college students organizing HackDFW, a collegiate-level hackathon based in Dallas, it gradually became a business that created hackathons for clients outside of the collegiate realm, such as T-Mobile and EarthX.

Problem

As the business grew more accustomed to producing hackathons, we noticed how creating “live sites” for each hackathon was taking up valuable time and resources.

These live sites contained all the information relevant to a participant during the hackathon, such as the schedule, rules, and FAQs. Some of the pain points of creating the live sites from scratch included:

  • Clients needed to rely on our development team to get any last-minute changes up to the live site.

  • Developers had to deploy changes quickly to production, which increased the risk of introducing bugs to the website.

  • Across hackathons, much of the information architecture was repetitive, resulting in time and resources lost when setting up the live site.

Solution

We created a no-code website builder tool, along with templates that would make it easier to set up an event. This tool would eliminate repetitive work for our developers, and make it easier for both our team and our clients to coordinate changes on the live site.

Quickly set up a live site with preset templates

Users can choose what sections to include or exclude with the help of our templates.

Customize and edit content without touching any code

Users can also easily update the content of the live site before the event starts or in real-time.
